Surrey Reuse Network developed through close collaboration of the founding member organisations and the full co-operation, guidance, support and financial investment of Surrey County Council. WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) also provided skills and resources with initial management support delivered through the ReAlliance and WRAP Rotate third sector capacity building programmes.
Although the main driver of the founding organisations is and has always been social, particularly the relief of poverty and marginalisation through development of furniture reuse organisations, each member also embraces a key environmental objective to minimise waste.
The ‘joined up’ approach of all the members encourages sharing of best practice and an attitude of I can’t but we can. This has led to delivery of contracts such as the Surrey Local Assistance Scheme where Surrey Reuse Network were prime contractor with service provided at local level by member organisations. Similar collaborations are projected for the future.
Jointly, Surrey Reuse Network has supported and guided its members to increase tonnages delivered and collected locally. Recycling of bulky waste has also been introduced leading to an exponential increase in waste diversion.
Surrey Reuse Network and its members now undertake over 35% of bulky waste collections throughout the county of Surrey.
